Post-Snow: The 3rd Culture

In 1959, the British novelist and scientist Charles Pearcy Snow was concerned with the problem of “the Two Cultures” – that of the literary intellectual and that of the (natural) scientist. Snow argued that practitioners of either of the two cultures know little, if anything, about the other and that communication is difficult, if at all possible.

Now, the Edge, established in 1988 by a group of free thinking scientists, known as the Reality Club, defined a third culture, consisting of those scientists and other thinkers in the empirical world who, through their work and expository writing, are taking the place of the traditional intellectual in rendering visible the deeper meanings of our lives, redefining who and what we are…
